20190512 back in nyc back home and feeling blessed to get to travel and play music with emily wells! the show at sunset tavern and doug fir were magical both in different ways. sunset will always stand out to me b/c it is the first solo set i’ve done in a proper venue and i was probably the most nervous i have been since playing a recital when i was 8 years old. sunset seattle crowd was so amazing and supportive, once i began playing and the audience was so quiet and respectful everything fell into place and i felt like i was at home just enjoying playing music through all my equipment. it was very interesting to talk to some people about the process and live side chaining and filtering.
doug fir was also amazing and i met so many people. pdx is different than any other city i’ve played with emily. they are the most die hard emily fans i have seen!
after i got back randy and i got together and wrote another song. we are 7 songs deep into this new album and can’t wait to get this new record out. looking fwd to playing apotheke tonight and trying some new things. feel like mike and i have both been doing some new and interesting things mostly with the dual organelles, and i’ve had a lot of fun exploring the op-1 and midi syncing.
20190501 i got the op-1 to midi match with the rest of my gear. it took a few hours but i realized that i had an old usb to mini usb chord which didn’t work. once i replaced the chord it worked like a charm. also the kenton usb midi hub can be powered with a regular iphone charger/brick. i’ve been using the acidbox iii on everything. its basically on all the time and i love how it just colors all the ambience going in to it. for the seattle set i plan on just doing very simple kick drums with my tempest and very slow dubby stuff. also i’ve been collecting as many bamboo chime samples and different species of birds as ambience. after this show i plan on using my stereo mixer and connect my organelle, op-1, korg volca both stereo so i can send it through my pedals or send it straight to the di maybe through a submixer.
20190428 back on routine. coffee shop and writing everyday. variety just opened up a larger cafe on driggs and russell across from mcgorlick park. it is packed everyday and impossible to find seating but they are doing a great job. i don’t think they even expected it to be so successful. last night i had a gig with randy at academy of medicine in the UES. it felt good to play through all of our repertoire including the bossas and some choros. i felt rusty, we also had a new indiana rehearsal and wrote another song. the vibe of the next album is slowly coming together, still soft as always but some interesting layering in acoustic ways.
i’ve also been putting together a solo set for my seattle show w emily. i’ve been treating this like a one off and experimenting in colors and textures and delays and filters. i am trying to get my op1 midi sync’d with the rest of the fam and want to use that as a midi master. i also recently got a iso mxr which powers everything! so i have clean power on every effect. slowly getting ready of excess noise which has killed my vibe since forever. next step is deciding if i want to run my echoplexes and organelle, and op-1 stereo…
20190416 end of eu tour with emily wells
tour tour came to an end and trying to find my place back in ny. trying to get on a schedule. luckily live footage has a three show residency this week at soho grand march 17, 19, 20 from 7pm-10pm. i really appreciated all the lovely crowds we got to perform for. paris stood out. might be the biggest audience i’ve ever performed for. every venue was so professional and helpful in loading in and out. i learned a lot. on tour you have a sense of purpose every day, even if its just driving and setting up and playing. feels rudimentary but on a day to day here i have lost that sense.

20190228 Jack Daniels party on Bowery feat. Live Footage
today on the way to the venue i was searching for directions on my phone while driving.. i got pulled over and issued a summons. fml. my car’s registration had just run out too! double tickets.. jack daniels/via mirrorball is always a good time. met some way too drunk people trying to force me to drink. ‘nah man i’m good..’ i switched my pedalboard around so the organelle and op1 are up top so it doesn’t twist my back around. used my gate pedal as a sidechain today which was nice b/c i can control the volume more precisely. tomorrow i’m going to check out a ACIDBOX3 with stereo outputs. hopefully it can replace my tracer city in my fx chain. i’ll do a review here if i end up buying it. the tracer city is almost perfect but its a little too big and heavy, and also it pops when i turn it on.. also its gain knob is really loud, the pot is..its basically a old grumpy man that sounds amazing.. on the way home mike put on some deepchord which reminded me a lot of rhythm and sound but a faster version, but sounded like everything is going through a low pass filter, recorded to tape w a bunch of hiss and vibe. i like it! also we were listening to some john cage quartet for twelve tom toms. so inspiring and live and vibey as well.
i’ve been listening to too much sleepyeyes where my sidechain is getting silly. i’m sidechaining shit thats looped and already sidechained. so much sidechain that you can barely only hear the ducking and not the music anymore… not bad.
today i missed emily well’s release show at house of yes. so horrible. i really wish i couldve been there…. looked amazing..
20190227 Nosaj Thing Feat Kazu Makino remix by me : HOW WE DO
i wanna get into remixing songs. for this one i pitched it down and sampled the first verse.. did some reverse cymbals and add some chord changes. i don’t really know how to so just gonna do it and see if i can figure out a system… next one i started on is yaeji.
20190225 Live Footage Cello Quartets
tape then re-taping. we were at the blue room with Nolan and have been sending every song and 8 different mics of each song through my roland 301 echo only. its been a very interesting approach. there is a degradation of sound quality obviously but what you trade for that is vibe. its ironic that we spent so much money going through a half a million neve board, the best mics and pre-amps to only send it through a tape only signal. anyway it sounds unique and vibey. next step is to mix it at bunker in the coming weeks/months.
20190219 my thesis for 2019 is to get my gear routing perfect. the goal is to
step 1. send my cello into (a)pedals into a (b)looper into (c)another set of delays + filters + compression into a (d)second looper.
step 2. re-route the order of all of these so (b) can get before (a) and etc. i want to re-use each loop through both of my pedalboards. the problem is that the gain staging of each re-order leaves me constantly re-adjusting levels on the loopers and pedals etc. everyday it is getting closer to being able to be ‘meta-looped’.
these days working on sequencing my cello through different voices on the TEMPEST (DSI) this through the meta-loop process gives me tons of options in songwriting..
spring tour with Emily Wells
i’m excited to be joining my very talented friend Emily Wells for her spring 2019 tour! we’ve done a lot of playing together over the years and i’m excited to be joining her through Europe. find show dates here.
20180727 check out the newindianamusic.com webpage for shows and tours. we're excited to have a few tracks released and for our Vinyl Release show at Rockwood Music Hall stage 3.
20180222 i just posted an album on soundcloud. mostly from trying to write everyday both for acoustic cello and electronic. today mostly is about learning how to use my roland mc303 and my dave smith tempest. listening to someone who mike turned me on to PATRICIA i really love how stylized he is. you know its him immediately.
20180210 Los Angeles. just spent a week here checking out a bunch of shows and seeing the new beautiful apotheke in la! not quite the same vibe as nyc but i'm sure they're going to make a killing with that beautiful out door seating area. hopefully some la friends get to do residencies there!
20180201 We spent 3 days at the Bunker recording our newest album called Sunday Night Vice. Mckenzie Frye came down on the first day and jammed with us. blessed to know such a talented chill improviser that speaks our languange!
20180102 happy new year! mike and i made a spotify playlist of a bunch of our favorite songs. unfortunately none from our newest album bunker will be on it. check it here SPOTIFY
20171219 been listening to a lot of collaboration between ryuichi sakamoto and alva noto mainly this album called summvs. really subtle and subconscious sounds floating around in space. also korean photographer jungjin lee is amazing.
live footage finally got stickers in of our bunker album and of doyers. we'll have bunker t-shirts in by the new years also.
here is one of her photographs, she can create such a mood..
20171211 at apotheke last night chris marshall was playing some dirty beaches. today i listened to his music all day, took walks to his music and put it on between every break i took while practicing. really amazing music and definitely the vibe that i try and create. also have been really into monster rally, war, and watching this lecture series at harvard by herbie hancock here. . also live footage is seeing if we can work with an amazing photographer renato d'agostin. we went to his studio and were blown away.
a few days ago i just had a recording session with a good friend and amazing sax player danny meyer. he brought a few friends: colin stranahan (drums), tyler gilmore (electronics and keyboards), kenny warren (trumpet), miho hatori (fx and vocals) and lonnie holley (vocals and piano). it was definitely a lot of fun and a great experience. lonnie holley really amazed with his simplicity and beauty of keys and voice.
20171201 Live footage finally has a reel. its taken years and so many (too many) revisions but finally it is up and we're excited. such a great experience to work with so many great artists from michael gugger (performer), to drew lightfoot, to charles billot, coodie and chike.
20171128 back from staatsville upstate nyc for thanksgiving with friends & family. the weeks leading up to the vacation were very busy and interesting. i had two shows with the amazing maestro henry threadgill. the line up was a sextet of henry on flute and bass flute and 3 cellos and 2 double bassists. we had 8 rehearsals and 2 shows in two weeks. i learned quite a lot about harmony and complex rhythms, tone rows and improvising within those parameters. hope to play more shows with this ensemble.
20170905 had a dress rehearsal with an old time collaborator laurie berg. she has been awarded many grants but this one is at dixon place and is a mix of everything she does and creates from dance to jewelry. She is quite a creative force and an amazing talent! for this piece she wants me to have a juxtaposition using julee cruise and avante garde sounds. there will also be a beat oriented fashion runway show featuring her jewelry. here is a link to the show . link.
in 2006 we collaborated on a show at shri yoga studio. it was a multimedia event with dance, music, poetry, art and visuals. for that show i met mike thies and we composed the music to freedom happening. from there on mike and i started live footage about 11 years strong to date.
20170816 just got a big monitor to attach my laptop too. here is the current rendition
everything is patching well for now while i wait for my patchbay. next time i go in the studio with live footage i want to be able to have several inputs for my signal and to really pick and chose what goes into which channel etc. from now until then i just have to get fluent in routing everything through Left and right channels of my mixer. today i did it for the first time and was confusing. i also got samples on my organelle to sample up to 2 seconds. this was a major feat helped on by shreeswifty he makes patches. studio goal is to look like this one
listening to: mndsgn
20170815 i just ordered a patchbay with some cables and a new wah wah. i need some more filter range for those sweeps and also need some extra volume. currently i'm having to hit my distortion to boost my signal a little bit. i'm excited to get the patchbay up and running and finally able to really manipulate my signal path to the fullest. i think i finally mapped out a good one while i sat at grumpy cafe today with danny. so basically i'll have everything going into a mixer (juno60, rs09, cello, organelle) the left side goes into the left of my ehx stereo delay pedal which continues to the rest of my pedalboard and into another mixer into my echoplex 1 into another set of pedals into my echoplex 2 into my amp into input 1 to be recorded. the right side of the mixer goes into the right of my ehx delay into my echoplex 3 and into input 2 to be recorded. i'll put the Fx of the mixer into my re301 tape echo and maybe sherman filterbank once i learn how to use it.
danny showed me some midi stuff he's been working on. basically his computer can predict what he's gonna sing with almost 0 latency. here is a little video of it
last night at apotheke was great. liz from one of the vibiest coolest bands tablets came out with melissa godoy nieto (a long time collaborator of ours) also steven tenney was there working on a new play.
20170813. yesterday in charlottesville va there was a white nationalist march. it doesn't surprise me one bit that this happens. trump is just the figurehead. everyday we come across assholes just like him. its not about trump, its about all the millions of people that voted for him. trump just empowers these nationalists and makes them realize that they do in fact have numbers and strength and they are not alone. well more and more friction happens everyday and with tension comes release. we'll just find out what that release will be..
20170811 almost done mixing the new live footage record with nolan. today we worked on space kush and finished up time's tale. excited about how the final mix sessions have really glued everything together. we'll probably book a few more sessions to run everything thru tape at the bunker. but all in all sounding great.
got the mastered songs back for new indiana from warren ammerman. these are all sounding so much better. we wanted them to all just be pristine and i think we're as close as we can be to that without changing the dna.
listening to hauschka. soundtrack to lion was amazing.
20170810 went to fire island today. listened to a flying lotus and nosaj thing some keith ape and dumbfounded. was thinking about how asians finally have a place that makes sense for them in music. rock and hip hop always felt like asians were a guest in someone elses home. electronic music seems to make a lot of sense. very proud of artists: tokimonsta, nosaj, mndsgn, dumbfounded, shigetos. there are a lot of asian artists for young asians to look up to these days. i see this industry having more and more talented kids in the future.
20170809 today i had a mixing session with Live footage. we have two songs left; the look through sunglasses and space kush. we messed around with doing these disco cello parts through all tape and they sound like one of those hong kong martial arts movies. good to know. also met with rich levinson about collaborating on something very exciting.
finally figured out that fcb1010 to organelle thing. it was an update problem which is now solved. watching nosaj thing's playboy interview. so good
20170808 i learned when i hit my fcb1010 it sends a 'program change' to the organelle and switches patches. all i have to do is delete the pgmin object... ok what is the pgmin object... hmm... my goal was to not go to sleep until this was figured out. i've written a few friends and some forums but doesn't look like i'm in luck today.. fml.
just met w james amoros who is building me the baddest pedalboard of all time! here it is so far can't wait.
20170807 dealing w carpel tunnel (tennis elbow). great excuse for corean spa + massage + acupuncture also to finally learn all these synths and drum machines more in depth.
work flow: trying to get a midi signal out of logic into: dave smith tempest, organelle, and 3 gibson echoplexes. right now every time i hit my fcb1010 it screws up my organelle sync. figured out how to send a ghost beat out of tempest into my juno60 to trigger the arpeggiator finally. also learned how to connect my apogee quartet and duet together to have 6 analog inputs. i'll be getting my roland re301 (space echo) back from jon hildenstein here in a few days.
listening to: malik abdul-rahmaan
